View Full Version : Air Bag check light....

About a week ago the Air Bag check light came on. I thought at first maybe from pulling out the cluster to add the LED lights. But I rechecked and everything is plugged in good, the wires are not pinched or binding. So I don't know what else to do. I have not had this come on before. Do you think the LEDS could cause an bad signal that it could cause it to light up?
And was wondering if anyone has had this problem and what they do to solve it. I hope I don't have to take it too a shop. But whatever advice can be tossed my way would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance...

I know that with Tiburons if you remove the gauge cluster with the battery hooked up you will get a check engine light. Did you unhook your battery first? If not you will have to go to Hyundai and get them to reset it. I think it cost me $40 to get it reset when I learned my lesson. lol

I unhooked my battery when switching out my cluster so I'm glad I did. If you unplug the battery over night or for a few will it reset? Or is that not a good idea?

it will store it internally because it's a safety feature...so it has to be cleared through a computer. funny though, I have had my cluster out more times than I can count and have never had that happen.

Same here... never had a problem with the Airbag light, and I've pulled the cluster out and completely apart on a number of occasions. I think I only have to do it one more time then I'm done with the cluster. lol

The first couple of times, I had the battery while working on the new radio deck. And had the cluster out then. When I recently changed the speedo cable a few months ago, i can't remember if I disconnected it. But up till now with the cluster, I have had it out 2-3 time and put back with no problems. Hmmmm... I guess I can check with the local service shop, give them a call. They handle all import types and always busy by the looks of it. I'll call around and check on cost and or if there is something else I can do. $40.00 not too bad i guess, i could always hoep for that low cost.

not sure if the accent has the seat belt sensor like the GK has...I know grappledon had that issue awhile ago...if the sensor goes out in the lock device and cause the air bag light to come on.

Check the connections under your seat, as well. (If you have SRS airbags in the seats.)

Don't let on that you know why the light came on, maybe they will give you a freebie.

its a 98. I think it has srs bags, but not sure about the seats... I guess it'll be ok to drive till I get it looked at. Since I saw that light on all i could think about was hope i don't go over a bad bump and have it deployed in my face while driving...lol.

when the light is on...the bags won't work...part of the safety system...just means there is something wrong andhave it checked out...it show up under the CEL codes if you get it read at auto zone.

ok here is the lis of things that can fault to make the srs light to come on.
dab = driver air bag
pab = passenger air bag
dsab = driver-side air bag (seat)
psab = passenger side air bag (seat)
sab = side air bag
psbt = passenger seat belt tensioner
ppd = passenger presence deector
squib = firing circuit in the air bag/pretensioner
srscm = supplemental restraint control module
shorting bar = spring-loaded contacts which purposely short the air bag or pretensioner contacts together when the srscm connector is removed to prevent inadvertant deployment.
if any fault is detected, the srscm sends signal to the indicator lamp on the cluser to warn the driver. the mil indicator is the key to driver notification of srs faults. verify lamp and srscm opration by flashing 6 times when the ignition switch is firs turned on.
once a fault occurred in the system srscm records the fault to the memory of dtc and the dtc is erased only by scan tool.

MIL opreating conditions
1. loss of ignition voltage supply to srscm lamp turned on continuously.
2.loss of internal operating voltage : lamp turned on continuously.
3. srscm not connected lamp turned on through shorting bar in wiring harness connector.

I'll have to see if it blinks 6 times. But thank you for looking those up. How bout this. I've had the steering column cover off, can direct sunlight to this unit also play a part? I was curious, since I had been working on the LEDs, I didn'r want to keep taking it off and on, and ruining the paint I did this summer. But when I do park I used the window sunscreen/visor to cover. There may have been times I had forgotten to put it up depending on how much of a hurry I was in.

NO...Direct sunlight will only kill vampires not electronics, or unless they are photosensitive LOLZ.

that is why I made that comment...keep us posted when you find out what the code is and if they were able to reset it.

Well I called the local hyundai repair shop. they said it could be a combo of things. Seat sensor, stuff under seats snagging or unhooking the wires, or airbags themselves. Cost to look and possible repair is about $100 maybe less depending on it and may have the car a day or 2 depending. But gave me some pointers to look and check for before sending it in. Says sometimes people can find it on their own vs. taking it in. But to call if I didn't get it figured out. so thats my update.
Geesh...$100. Whos been able to fix their own without taking it in?

so when my car was is the shop for 4 months, and was only started when i got it out. I had to use a battery charger to get it to start, and when i got the car started my airbag light was on, and has been on since.... like a year and a half now, maybe... could the number 1 option on your list that i quoted be the culprit for my airbag light staying on continuously?

sounds like it, but if the charger was connected directly to the battery plus and negative were connect...then that could have caused a back-feed and make it light up...I would get it checked out for sure.
